The Gracious Home Story Of course, there are many “beginnings.” We could talk about childhoods spent collecting seashells in Camaguey. But let’s just start with 1963, when Natan Wekselbaum and his brother left Cuba for New York City and opened up a little neighborhood hardware store on the Upper East Side. Nuts. Bolts. Nothing fancy.
Well, as everyone knows, New Yorkers don’t exactly fall all over themselves every time a new shop cuts its ribbon—but the charming duo made Gracious Home stand out. Beckley Inc. has always prided themselves on using the finest hand picked materials on all our products ranging from the hardwoods used in making a boxspring to the blended cotton felt we have sent to us from down south. Throughout the years, even with the temptation of commercial machinery, we managed to keep our manufacturing very personal as to each client's needs. Donghia is a privately owned furniture and textile company, founded by Angelo Donghia who, in his brief lifetime, established the high standards which have become the company’s hallmark. Patio.com’s grass-root origins predate the dot-com era. The company (now owned by three brothers raised in Westport, CT) was founded by David Ross 25 years ago. As a high school student, David started a pool service company with $50. Business grew quickly, and his brother, Philip, joined him as they became the first Connecticut pool service company to open a retail location. Shortly thereafter, a second location was opened in Greenwich, CT on a site of over an acre ... providing an opportunity to expand the scope of their retail operations to include outdoor furniture.

Classic Sofa was founded over 17 years ago by Maurice Stone and his sons with the goal of providing upholstered furniture of old world quality and style at an approachable price. When asked about his earliest antique acquisition, Karl Kemp replies, "It was a Biedermeier chair, which I purchased at my mother's suggestion. I was only 20 or 21 years old, but I bought it myself."
Kemp's mother, a woman of great taste and education, was also a fine collector of antiques. From their home in Cologne, Germany, she instilled in him an appreciation for the Neo-Classical decorative arts of the early 19th Century. Her guidance ultimately lead to Kemp to study the finer points of art history and architecture.
Ironically, Mr. Kemp did not immediately pursue his presnt vocation. his professional goals brought him to New York City in the early 1970's, where he held the position of Chief of Acquisitons at The Brooklyn Public Library.

Las Venus opened in 1995 on Ludlow Street in the up-and- coming Lower East Side of Manhattan. In the late 1990's, the Lower East Side experienced a renaissance, emerging as one of New York City's hippest neighborhoods. Las Venus and its celebration of 20th Century Pop Culture quickly became the talk of Ludlow Street.
