It all started in 1936 by Martha and Samuel Gorin. They opened an upholstery shop at 81 Franklin Street in downtown Norwich, known then as the Colonial Upholstery Company. They eventually expanded and became the Colonial Upholstery and Bedding Company. As the years passed, they grew, taking over the four floors of 81 through 87 Franklin Street and renamed the company to the Colonial Upholstery and Furniture Company.
In manhattan since 1897. Ten floors offering an inspired collection of rugs, furniture, antiques, home textiles, accessories and sustainable furnishings.

Since 1989 when Dialogica opened its first gallery in SoHo, New York, this modern and original furniture collection has earned the respect of designers and architects as well as received a enthusiastic reception from the press and public for its design excellence and innovation. In the same year, the company opened its own furniture manufacturing atelier. Dialogica's design and artistic direction is by Monique and Sergio Savarese. Metropolitan Home declared them the "leaders of a new design generation...showing the world how romantic modern furniture can be". The inspirations for their designs come from dreams, historical reference, travels and diverse cultural backgrounds to provide furniture that avoids trends. Comfort, beauty and quality are all part of a Dialogica design.
The great thing about designing furniture is that it is exclusively for humans; and regardless of how much humans evolve, we continue to have pretty basic needs in terms of furnishing the places where we live...We sleep in beds...We work at desks...We sit in chairs...We eat from table tops...We put our clothes in chests and wardrobes...Fortunately, I do not think that we will ever evolve to a state where this is different.
The Jensen-Lewis Furniture Store opened its doors in 1964 selling canvas sofas and chairs; but we quickly expanded our collections. Today our store is very contemporary and full of intelligently designed furniture - our line is international in scope. We are constantly introducing our customers to new and innovative styles of the highest quality; but when a design proves to be a classic we add it to our permanent collection.

Restoration Hardware was born of frustration. The year was 1979 and our founder, Stephen Gordon, was restoring his Queen Anne Victorian house in Eureka, California. After spending endless days tracking down missing bits and pieces of authentic period hardware, lighting fixtures and finishes, Gordon found there were a lot of people with the same problems. He sensed a need in the marketplace, found his true calling in life, and opened the first Restoration Hardware store in his home in 1980.

In 1953, two sisters from Cincinnati, Ohio came to New York City seeking adventure. Annie and Martha came up with the idea of making furniture out of various "parts". With flush doors and different sized legs they built dining tables, coffee tables, beds, sofas, room dividers, shelving, benches, and more.
These new creations were put on display in their first store, located in a brownstone on 51st Street and 3rd Avenue, which they named "Furniture in Parts". Annie and Martha lived just above their store and put all their energies into their new business.
Their hard work paid off when an editor from 'Look' magazine took notice of their novel approach to furniture and design. He wrote an article, accompanied with photos, all about their unique concept. It was in this 'Look' magazine article that their store "Furniture in Parts" was appropriately nick-named "Door Store". The article drew so much attention that several more newspaper and magazine stories followed. The sisters even appeared on national TV on Arlene Francis' morning show! http://www.doorstorefurniture.com
