O Restaurante Lamas sempre foi um reduto da boêmia carioca, um ponto de encontro de jornalistas, políticos, artistas, intelectuais, empresários e estudantes. Tudo começou no Largo do Machado (o endereço era Rua do Catete 295), em 4 de abril de 1874, no bar fundado pelo português Francisco Tomé dos Santos Lamas. O Lamas era uma eterna festa, permanecia aberto 24 horas por dia. Entre os seus mais assíduos frequentadores, Getúlio Vargas lá, ia tomar chá. Oswaldo Aranha diariamente comia um filé incrementado (que acabou sendo batizado com seu nome), Paulo Gracindo, Carlos Lacerda, Carmen Miranda, Juscelino Kubitschek, Chacrinha, Dercy Gonçalves, Albino Pinheiro, Grande Otelo, Chico Caruso, Jaguar e o pessoal da antiga UNE. Entre os visitantes ocasionais, os mais conhecidos foram Noel Rosa (depois das noitadas na Lapa), Orson Welles, Rachel Welch, Catherine Deneuve e Bianca Jagger.

A história do La Mole começa em abril de 1958, quando o italiano Domenico Magliano fundou a pequena Sorveteria e Pizzaria La Mole, na Rua Dias Ferreira, no Leblon. O nome da casa foi uma homenagem à torre Mole Antonelliana, localizada em Turim, na Itália, cidade natal do fundador.
