A história da fundação da ABI se confunde com a de seu perseverante idealizador Gustavo de Lacerda. The Panama Rocks are reputed to be the world's most extensive outcropping of glacier-sculpted, ocean-quartz-conglomerate rock. Geologists believe the rocks originated as sand and gravel sea islands, over 300 million years ago. The islands were part of a huge river delta. Over aeons, the islands were covered by thousands of feet of sediments, and were 'pressure compacted' into rock. About 165 million years ago, the rock was fractured and uplifted to its present altitude [1650']. During the last Ice Age, a glacier cut-into and unearthed the rock. Since that time a lush, mixed forest has grown over the site.

A Confeitaria Cavé ou, simplesmente, Cavé, data de 1860. É a mais antiga confeitaria do Rio de Janeiro. Foi fundada por Charles Auguste Cavé, francês que ficou a frente do negócio até 1922. Entrar nela é voltar ao passado, reviver um pouco do Rio Antigo. A arquitetura marcante da Cavé possui influências de diversos países. Lustres, vitrais e vidros em geral eram franceses; as cadeiras e mesas foram projetadas por Cólon, um espanhol que residia no Brasil.

Referência no município e um dos mais importantes do estado do Rio de Janeiro, tendo sediado diversas competições nacionais e internacionais, como a Copa do Mundo de Judô para Deficientes Visuais, em 2001; o Grand Prix de Atletismo, a Copa do Mundo de Natação e a Copa do Mundo de Ginástica, todos em 2004; e os Jogos Mundiais em cadeira de Rodas & Amputados, em setembro de 2005.
Ocupando uma área de 64 mil metros quadrados, o complexo tem capacidade para abrigar 3.835 espectadores no ginásio e 1.953 no estádio.
Entre outros destaques, possui um Ginásio Esportivo que leva o nome do grande jogador de basquetebol, Algodão, nascido em Campo Grande, e um dos maiores jogadores do esporte de todos os tempos no país, campeão mundial ao lado de outros grandes craques como Rosa Branca, Jatir e Wlamir Marques.
