The Gracious Home Story Of course, there are many “beginnings.” We could talk about childhoods spent collecting seashells in Camaguey. But let’s just start with 1963, when Natan Wekselbaum and his brother left Cuba for New York City and opened up a little neighborhood hardware store on the Upper East Side. Nuts. Bolts. Nothing fancy.
Well, as everyone knows, New Yorkers don’t exactly fall all over themselves every time a new shop cuts its ribbon—but the charming duo made Gracious Home stand out. They gave the red carpet treatment to every person who walked through the door. Will you deliver it? Of course. Can you install it? Our pleasure. Can you find one in chartreuse? We'll scour the globe.

Since the start of the company, Charles H. Beckley Inc. has always prided themselves on using the finest hand picked materials on all our products ranging from the hardwoods used in making a boxspring to the blended cotton felt we have sent to us from down south. In addition to that, and most importantly, we believe in the quality of our workmanship. Each piece of custom bedding is all hand made by our skilled craftsman. Throughout the years, even with the temptation of commercial machinery, we managed to keep our manufacturing very personal as to each client's needs. Each mattress is hand filled and hand stitched, each boxspring is hand tied and individually upholstered and so on. That's why we here at Charles H. It all started in 1936 by Martha and Samuel Gorin. They opened an upholstery shop at 81 Franklin Street in downtown Norwich, known then as the Colonial Upholstery Company. They eventually expanded and became the Colonial Upholstery and Bedding Company. As the years passed, they grew, taking over the four floors of 81 through 87 Franklin Street and renamed the company to the Colonial Upholstery and Furniture Company.

Donghia is a privately owned furniture and textile company, founded by Angelo Donghia who, in his brief lifetime, established the high standards which have become the company’s hallmark. Donghia’s uniquely focused look is achieved through classically inspired yet distinctly modern product. Sold worldwide (in the USA, to the trade only), Donghia presents “American design” at its best.
Donghia furniture ranges from upholstered sofas, chairs and beds to tables, casepieces, wicker and teak. Original Donghia designed accessories include lamps, mirrors and vessels hand made by Venetian craftsmen.
Donghia furniture combines both glamour and simplicity while successfully bridging the gap between contemporary and traditional design. Pieces within the collection work to complement each other as well as period antiques and exotic artifacts—their chameleon-like nature allowing them to fit seamlessly into any design vocabulary. The company’s designs continue to evolve through a series of design collaborations. Patio.com’s grass-root origins predate the dot-com era. The company (now owned by three brothers raised in Westport, CT) was founded by David Ross 25 years ago. As a high school student, David started a pool service company with $50. Business grew quickly, and his brother, Philip, joined him as they became the first Connecticut pool service company to open a retail location. Shortly thereafter, a second location was opened in Greenwich, CT on a site of over an acre ... providing an opportunity to expand the scope of their retail operations to include outdoor furniture.

Bill ’s Bedding is not the largest store in Connecticut. It also is not the oldest. But we are a one store, family owned and operated, full-line furniture store that has served Eastern Connecticut for almost 75 years.

In August 1893, John Willis, Jr. opened his first furniture store on Church Street, opposite St. Paul's church in downtown Norfolk. In 1901, he moved to the comer of Main and Church Streets in Norfolk in the Purcell Building that had been a hotel at one time. In 1912, he was the first occupant of the Mastin Building, later to become Smith and Welton Department Store.
