Our store is consistently rated one of the best wine shops in New York, and you can be assured that you will have access to the same outstanding selection and quality service that has made us a leading wine merchant.
For those interested in special bottles, old and rare wines, our collection ranges from 19th century Bordeaux to hot California "cult wines", from mature German dessert wines to the superstars of up-and-coming regions. Oversized bottles are in abundance, with Champagne and collectible reds both well represented. " |

Have you ever gone to see a movie that some critics loved, but you walked out, shaking your head, thinking: “Why did I just waste two hours watching that?” It’s the same with wine. I taste a wine that I think isn’t worth the bottle it’s in, and I find that some exalted writer has given it a high rating.

"Have a burning wine question that you can't seem to push out of your head? Sometimes talking about wine is intimidating. In fact, sometimes talking is intimidating. But emailing....now that's not scary.
Please welcome Vine's recently instituted advice column: Dear Vine.
Curious about what wine to pair with certain foods? Want to know what you should bring to your new in-laws this Thanksgiving? What biodynamic means? What's a good gift wine for your boss? What to drink on a second date? What Sancerre is? Should you buy those black J.Crew boots? Is he the one?" |

"Whiskey Ed" Houdek first opened the doors to Ye Olde Spirit Shoppe in 1965. Back then he'd deliver mail for the Bayport Post Office during the day and at night he'd work selling fine liquors and wine. In 1972 Ed doubled the size of the store making it so long and narrow that you could fit four lanes of bowling within the store's walls. But instead of balls and pins, we have the area's largest selection of fine wines and liquors.

"Who knows Italian Wine? With more than 2,000 grape varietals and 27,000 producers, the Italian wine world confounds wine professionals and enthusiasts alike. Since 1999, Italian Wine Merchants (IWM) has worked diligently to demystify Italian wine through its detailed website and weekly E-letter, Wine Clubs, educational tasting events and a carefully selected portfolio of current and vintage Italian bottlings. Under the direction of owner Sergio Esposito, IWM is widely considered the leading authority on Italian wine today.
Sergio represents an invaluable resource to collectors, enthusiasts, and wine writers. He travels to Italy up to ten times per year and personally sources 100% of IWM’s selection. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, comprising roles of sommelier, vintage broker, and his present position as head of his brainchild, Italian Wine Merchants, Sergio has established a network of Italian connoisseurs in every region who aid him as he unravels many of the complex issues regarding Italian wine. In addition to IWM’s portfolio of current releases, Sergio has amassed one of the greatest collections of vintage Italian wine in the world. These gems can be obtained through direct consultation with an IWM Portfolio Manager, by joining “Sergio’s Cellar” Wine Club, or by scheduling a private tasting in IWM’s Vintage Tasting Room or Studio del Gusto. Each lot has been pretasted by Sergio himself and all of the wines are stored on-site in IWM’s temperature-controlled cellar, ensuring the quality and integrity of every bottle." |

The original address of the Park Avenue Liquor Shop was 97 Park Avenue. As the landscape of the city began to change, the original home of our shop was marked to come down. But our love for the city was strong and we decided to make a move just around the corner to 23 East 40th Street. Then in 1975, we moved once more to our current location, 292 Madison Avenue.

In almost every other part of the world where wine is produced people drink almost exclusively the local stuff. But not in New York. Also, New York wines are rarely as cheap as the local plonk the locals everywhere else drink on a daily basis. But the wines have gotten a little less expensive and they continue to improve, so Uva Wines has recently expanded the selection of New York wines.

Some of them will age gracefully in your cellar for decades to come and some are meant to be enjoyed in the freshness of their youth. Some are full bodied, sun kissed and weighty, others light, fruity and thirst quenching. Some wear their austerity and mineral flavors on their sleeve but then others, if you were to close your eyes, will transport you to a fruit orchard.
