Surrounded by the same stately trees for which it was named, The Oaks, in Portland, Oregon in 2005 will celebrate its 100th consecutive year of operation, making it one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in America. Built by the Oregon Water Power and Navigation Company, the park opened its gates on May 30, 1905 to Portlanders who arrived by foot and on horseback, in automobiles and by boat from the Willamette River. In keeping with the design of other "Trolley Parks" across the country, most of its visitors disembarked from trolley cars which ran along the Portland-to-Oregon City tracks forming the eastern boundary of the park.

In 1978, the zoo closed to embark upon a two-year upgrade project. 1980 marked the rebirth of the zoo; it reopened with a new Nature Center, a Polar bear exhibit, a boardwalk through a native wetlands area and a North American bison exhibit. A Ilha da Boa Viagem, na ponta da Praia do mesmo nome, revela e oculta dois monumentos arquitetônicos do período colonial. Fincada em seu topo, solitária e poeticamente contemplando a baía de Guanabara, a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem se oferece aos olhos dos que a contemplam. Ocultas sob a vegetação, abaixo da Igreja, escondem-se as ruínas de uma fortificação que, no final do século XVII início do século XVIII, foi erguida com o nome de Forte da Barra, logo depois chamado Forte da Boa Viagem.

A 230 metros de altura, no morro do Pico, com entrada pelo Forte Barão do Rio Branco, estão plantadas as ruínas do conjunto arquitetônico que, no século XVIII, abrigou as fortificações do Pico ou São Luiz.

O Palácio do Itamaraty, de grande valor histórico e artístico é uma construção de 1851, autoria de Francisco José da Rocha, Conde de Itamarati. Foi sede do governo republicano de 1889 a 1898 e sede do Ministério das Relações Exteriores de 1899 a 1970. Os jardins e lago internos são de autoria de Jacinto Rebelo, como também o projeto do edifício principal do palácio, em estilo neoclássico, simétrico e de nobres proporções. Abriga, hoje, o Museu Histórico e Diplomático, Arquivo Histórico e Mapoteca. A edificação é o 8º prédio tombado pelo Patrimônio Histórico no país. Funciona no Palácio Itamaraty, a mais completa biblioteca de referência das Nações Unidas no Brasil, com documentos sobre a Organização internacional. A Biblioteca do Centro de Informação da ONU no Rio de Janeiro possui mais de 15 mil livros e 300 títulos de periódicos a disposição dos usuários, além de folhetos e material informativo.

O Castelinho do Flamengo, também conhecido como Castelinho das Bruxas e Castelinho do Flamengo, patrimônio histórico tombado da cidade, construção residencial do Comendador Joaquim da Silva Cardoso e sua esposa Dona Carolina.Castelinho no início do Século XX, foi projetado em 1916 pelo arquiteto italiano Gino Copede e sua construção terminou em 1918.
O Centro Cultural municipal foi criado em 1992. O nome escolhido buscou homenagear o dramaturgo carioca Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, carinhosamente chamado pelos amigos de Vianinha, falecido precocemente em 1974.
