Tottenville High School was established in 1898. The school’s first principal was Nathan J. Lowe. Tottenville High School was originally located in the building now home to Totten Intermediate Junior High School (I.S. 34). In 1972, the school moved to its current location in Huguenot. Dr. Mary E. Meade was the first woman principal of a NYC co-educational school (1938–1944). In November 1987, Tottenville was selected as a “School of Excellence” by the U.S. Department of Education.
