By 1911, Darling’s had expanded to Portland, and become statewide distributor for REO. By 1922, the Darling Automobile Company had REO sales of over a million dollars a year.
In 1926, Clarence Darling, a nephew of the founder, opened a Bangor location, and in 1927, Darling’s opened in Augusta.
In 1935, REO ceased production, and the Darling Automobile Company that was REO’s statewide distributor went out of business.
In 1937, Clarence’s son Owen opened the first of today’s Darling’s stores. Today, Owen’s son John, grandchildren Jay, Carrie, Lynne and over 200 associates, sell and service:
Honda, Nissan, Volvo, Audi, VW, and Ford from 2 locations in Bangor
Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Buick, Pontiac, and GMC in Ellsworth
