Considered the first successful adaptive re-use project in the country, was originally a chocolate factory established by Domenico “Domingo” Ghirardelli. The chocolate manufacturing operation was sold and transferred to San Leandro in the 1960s. Unique shops and restaurants were created within the old factory combining the latest in retailing and fine cuisine with the flavor of old San Francisco. The restoration project officially opened on November 29, 1964.
Today, Ghirardelli Square delights visitors with its lively retail mix, while maintaining Ghirardelli’s tradition as a trendsetter for the rest of the world. It continues to serve as a model for restoration complexes throughout the country such as Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston and Baltimore’s Harborplace. |

Bristol Mall is the only regional shopping mall serving Bristol, Virginia. The mall was built in the early to mid 1970s. The mall is notable to the area because it was at one time the largest enclosed indoor mall in the Upper East Tennessee/Southwest Virginia area.[citation needed] Anchor stores of the mall comprise two Belk stores, as well as JCPenney and Sears. One of the Belk stores was previously Parks-Belk, while the other, which opened as Miller's Department Store, later became Hess's and then Proffitt's.
Bristol Mall has the usual mix of restaurants, mall services, fast food, and other typical mall stores, as well as a movie theater. There are also nine food establishments including Chick-Fil-A, Subway, and Piccadilly Cafeterias. With Bristol being the home of country music, long before Knoxville or Nashville, for many years there has been a museum at the mall, showcasing the legacy this left to the area. Source |

The shopping center is part of a more than $500 million investment, surrounded by the Kansas Speedway, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Great Wolf Lodge, Phoenix Theatres at the Legends 14, Cabela's and CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The Legends at Village West is still an ongoing project as there are still many more developments still planned, including a $705 million Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The shopping center offers more than 110 retail/restaurant outlets including Dave & Busters and a Saddle Ranch Chop House, one of only five in the United States.
The Legends at Village West includes an audio walking tour of the more than 80 Kansans who are represented visually on medallions, posters, murals and in sculpture throughout the center. The Legends honors legends of Kansas in athletics, music, exploration, science, technology, politics, art and other fields. The Legends theme is interwoven throughout the facility, offering information about Kansas’ history, heritage and environment. Each corridor and courtyard of the center is dedicated to a particular category of famous Kansans or aspect of the state and its history. Beginning February 1, 2007, a free self-guided audio tour will lead visitors through each corridor, providing information about the legends and the artistic representations in which they are depicted. A key factor in the center’s success is its location adjacent to Hwy 99, a natural geographic destination for retailers expanding from Sacramento to Los Angeles. To ensure the mall’s market dominance, Macerich completed a $10 million renovation in Spring 2002 and is now developing plans for the addition of a lifestyle center.

The largest enclosed mall in the Triangle. Crabtree Valley contains over 220 stores and is anchored by Belk, Sears, and Macy's. Higher-end restaurants located in the mall include The Cheesecake Factory, P. F. Chang's China Bistro, and Kanki.
From the start, the mall pulled shoppers from all over central and eastern North Carolina. Many of them came to the 251,000-square-foot (23,300 m2) Hudson Belk, which is still the largest store in the complex and serves as a Belk flagship. The mall was remodeled in the mid 1980s and added many upscale specialty stores and a food court. It faced remarkably little competition in its market until the 1990s, when Cary Towne Center in nearby Cary doubled in size and spawned a companion mall, Crossroads Plaza. Source |
