We first opened our doors in 1962 as a family business. A husband and wife team named Gordon and Carole Segal, and one (yes, count them... one) eager sales associate who was enthusiastic about their vision. One can only imagine the office parties they had. Table for three, please. Fast forward forty years. And did it ever go fast. Today's Crate and Barrel family has grown to over 115 stores and over 6000 associates nationwide. And, we might add, still growing. While we are proud of our growth and achievements over the years, we feel it is what we fondly call the "3 P's" that has kept our vision and product as fresh and invigorated as the day we opened.

The history of Karl's is spanning three generations of ownership. In 1920, Simon and Florence Richman opened the doors of Karl's on the premise that the customer deserves unique merchandise and impeccable service. Forty years later, they were succeeded by their son, Alan Richman, who also held this philosophy close to his heart. Libby's Torrington Furniture was started over 78 years ago by David Libby and Jack Apter. David became sole owner of the store in 1950. In 1968 David moved the store to its' current location at 104 Main Street. In August 1893, John Willis, Jr. opened his first furniture store on Church Street, opposite St. Paul's church in downtown Norfolk. In 1901, he moved to the comer of Main and Church Streets in Norfolk in the Purcell Building that had been a hotel at one time. In 1912, he was the first occupant of the Mastin Building, later to become Smith and Welton Department Store.

Bill ’s Bedding is not the largest store in Connecticut. It also is not the oldest. But we are a one store, family owned and operated, full-line furniture store that has served Eastern Connecticut for almost 75 years.

It all started in 1936 by Martha and Samuel Gorin. They opened an upholstery shop at 81 Franklin Street in downtown Norwich, known then as the Colonial Upholstery Company. They eventually expanded and became the Colonial Upholstery and Bedding Company. As the years passed, they grew, taking over the four floors of 81 through 87 Franklin Street and renamed the company to the Colonial Upholstery and Furniture Company.
