The real magic happens when you board the Atlantis Explorer, a river tour that takes you out onto the water to witness Long Island's natural ecosystem firsthand. Winter brings a quieter, more intimate feel to these excursions—fewer crowds mean you'll spot wildlife without the seasonal bustle. Whether you want to get soaked or stay dry is entirely your call. Beyond the exhibits and tours, the facility partners closely with Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program and anchors New York State's only authorized marine animal stranding and rehabilitation center. The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation operates from this location, making education and conservation core to everything that happens here.

Belmont Park is a 430-acre racetrack in Elmont, N.Y. There are two race meetings at Belmont Park in 2012: the 56-day Spring/Summer meeting will be from April 27 to July 15; and the 37-day Fall Championship meeting will be from Sept. 8 to Oct. 28. Belmont Park is the home of the 144th Running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday June 9, 2012.
