Our students are accomplished, diverse, and civic-minded. When they graduate, they join the ranks of our 16,000-strong alumni body. Our alumni are noted members of the bench and bar, and are leaders in public service and private industry. Our faculty are internationally recognized scholars, whose influence extends far beyond the borders of our campus. Here at BLS, these gifted teachers are dedicated to honing the legal minds of the 21st century. Our curriculum is attuned to the evolving needs of our students and the society they will serve. Innovative teaching techniques augment traditional course offerings with instruction in emerging areas of law. Then there is our location in beautiful Brooklyn Heights. Brooklyn College is a member unit of the City University of New York, the nation's leading public urban university. One of the first co-educational colleges chartered by the University of the State of New York and the oldest private liberal arts university on Long Island, was founded in 1896 through the efforts of Dr. Charles H. Levermore and Timothy Woodruff. Dr. Levermore became its first president. Mr. Woodruff, a former Lieutenant Governor of New York State, served as president of the Board of Trustees.

The Law School's lawyering program spans all three years of law school and is designed to prepare each student for the practice of law. Beginning in the first year, students are introduced to lawyering skills and perspectives as part of the required curriculum. In the second year, students choose from a range of lawyering seminars that strengthen skills and knowledge to use in several different public interest areas. Finally, in their third year, students select a clinical offering from the Law School's nationally-ranked clinical program.

Stony Brook’s reach extends from its 1,039-acre campus on Long Island’s North Shore – encompassing the main academic areas, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex, a performing arts center, Stony Brook University Medical Center, the Health Sciences Center, and the Veterans Home – to Stony Brook Manhattan, a new Research and Development Park, three business incubators including one at Calverton, New York, and the Stony Brook Southampton campus on Long Island’s East End.
