From its inception in 1899, Calvary Hospital has been faithfully devoted to providing palliative care to adult patients in the advanced stages of cancer, addressing the symptoms of the disease, not its cure. A voluntary, not-for-profit hospital, operated in connection with the Archdiocese of New York, Calvary continues to embody this tradition of caring through the services and programs offered and through the dedication and concern shown by its staff members.<br> The Hospital will continue to be faithful to this tradition through a twofold commitment. Calvary will strive primarily to expand its programs and services to meet the emerging physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of both patients and families through the provision of acute inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice, and satellite services. In addition, through the Palliative Care Institute the Hospital will endeavor to transmit to other health care professionals, through research and education, the knowledge and competence which it has developed in the care of the advanced cancer patient.

The Laury Group, Inc. was established in 1968 when Laury Ford Jeambon, who was Personnel Coordinator and Executive Assistant to the Sunday Editor of The New York Times, decided that even the best of all possible work worlds could be fraught with office politics. Specifically, several of the oldest buildings on campus are unable to meet the space and program needs of our faculty and students. In order to maintain programs and to expand other areas of the curriculum, SJVA proposed a $5 million renovation and construction project. This will primarily consolidate the high school's academic space into a central location by enlarging and renovating the existing high school facility. A three-story wing is being built and connected to the current two-story high school. All new classrooms will be provided with "T1" Internet access lines. The project broke ground in December 2004 and is anticipated to be completed by September 2005. Of this $5 million renovation and construction project, $1 million must be raised from a capital campaign. Because St. John Villa is a private Catholic school, we do not receive public funds or money from the Archdiocese for capital projects and therefore, must seek private donations to accomplish this greatly needed project.

The origins of Goju Ryu Karate are shrouded in the mists of time. Many of the techniques found in this powerful style are common to the fighting systems of South China. Emphasis is placed on breath control and conditioning. What is now called GoJu Ryu or the hard/soft system was introduced into Okinawa by Kanryo Higaonna early in this century. His primary student, Chojun Miyagi, developed the style further incorporating three new forms (kata). At that time Goju Ryu did not have an official name.
