Skate Penn has been operating in State College, PA since October 2007. After Shop Co-Owner Christian Pfeifer relocated from Colorado and landed in State College, Pennsylvania, the options for purchasing skate gear were slim, and even the places that had it available had very little knowledge about skateboarding. Products were only available in stores that carried multiple types of products, therefore, there was no real "Skate Shop" for local riders to call home. With that in mind, Christian got on the phone to his brother "Shaggy" Pfeifer, who was living in St. Petersburg, Florida, and told him of the need for a Skate Shop in town. Shaggy decided he would come check out the scene and a few weeks later he visited State College, and after spending a weekend in town, and seeing the potential, he relocated and the concept of Skate Penn was born, and then in October of 2007, Skate Penn opened its doors in the original location in the Fraser St Alley.

Pro Skater Kerry Getz, Professional skateboarding videographer and artist Mark Brandstetter and business savvy Sophia Raab, joined together to create a vision that extends beyond the traditional industry standards. The start of the Nocturnal brand began in a huge warehouse in New Jersey; where Mark Brandstetter trained professional artists from Philadelphia and New York to paint Custom decks, grip tape and completes. The concept that all Nocturnal products are unique has formed a movement of those seeking to express their individuality. Mike Maldonado a veteran professional in the industry along with amateur Kyle Nicholson joined the Nocturnal family, thus adding a new dimension of talent. As Nocturnal continues to bring its fresh look to the “kid on the street” the infinite possibilities keep the industry hyped.

Greg and Chris Brauch established Final Boarding in 1996, founding their business on the belief that skateboarders deserve the same customer service and reliable sales staff as any other retail shopper. They train our employees to be salespeople, not just clerks. They are educated about the products they sell and are there to lend their knowledge and support. While customer service is their number one priority, product selection and price are also very important.

In 1938, mountain climbers Lloyd and Mary Anderson joined with 21 fellow Northwest climbers to found Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI). The group structured REI as a consumer cooperative to purchase high-quality ice axes and climbing equipment from Europe because such gear could not be purchased locally. The word quickly spread, and soon many other outdoors people joined the co-op. As REI grew, so too did the range of outdoor gear available to the co-op members.
