Hunter College, located in the heart of bustling Manhattan, is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Goddard College was chartered in 1938 as successor to Goddard Seminary, a Universalist preparatory school, which had operated in Barre, Vermont since Civil War times. The Universalists, a controversial "liberal" sect, started the seminary as an alternative to the Baptists' Colby Academy and the Methodists' Montpelier Seminary. It served as a feeder school to Tufts University. In 1929 the Seminary became Goddard School for Girls, and in 1935 became a junior college for women.

Touro College is a Jewish-sponsored independent institution of higher and professional education. The College was established primarily to enrich the Jewish heritage, and to serve the larger American community. Approximately twenty-one thousand students are currently enrolled in its various schools and divisions.

Founded in 1847 as The Free Academy, The City College of New York (CCNY) was one of the great experiments of the young American democracy. At the urging of School Board President Townsend Harris, New York established a school to provide access to higher education for bright young men from working class and immigrant families who could not afford private college. Named after John Marshall, the great Chief Justice of the United States, Marshall Academy was established in 1837. Marshall became a university in 1961 and has since grown tremendously, particularly in the 1990's which saw the construction of the state-of-the-art Drinko Library, Jomie Jazz Center and the addition of the Graduate College.

With 330 students and 41 faculty, Marlboro College offers a student-centered approach to education that is structurally and culturally different from those of other colleges.

The University of Toronto was founded as King’s College in 1827 and has evolved into a large and complex institution.
