Considered the first successful adaptive re-use project in the country, was originally a chocolate factory established by Domenico “Domingo” Ghirardelli. The chocolate manufacturing operation was sold and transferred to San Leandro in the 1960s. Broadway Mall (formerly Mid-Island Plaza) debuted in October, 1956, on the site of a former boys' orphanage and a dairy and vegetable farm operated by the Catholic Church. Richard and Anne Evers, who have lived in Hicksville for 50 years, remember the anticipation of Mid-Island's grand opening.
