Don's Home Furniture has been a long time in the making. For over 20 years we have continued to grow into a very sizeable independent furniture store. When it all began back in 1986, the little 1800 square foot store on Madison's south east side was called Don's Collection of Reproductions. Back then we carried mostly oak furniture that was new, but made to look like the antiques of the early 1900's. We were so small back then that when a customer came into the store we actually had to walk away from them just so we could stay out of their way while they looked around.........

When asked about his earliest antique acquisition, Karl Kemp replies, "It was a Biedermeier chair, which I purchased at my mother's suggestion. I was only 20 or 21 years old, but I bought it myself."
Kemp's mother, a woman of great taste and education, was also a fine collector of antiques. From their home in Cologne, Germany, she instilled in him an appreciation for the Neo-Classical decorative arts of the early 19th Century. Her guidance ultimately lead to Kemp to study the finer points of art history and architecture.
Ironically, Mr. Kemp did not immediately pursue his presnt vocation. his professional goals brought him to New York City in the early 1970's, where he held the position of Chief of Acquisitons at The Brooklyn Public Library.

It all started in 1936 by Martha and Samuel Gorin. They opened an upholstery shop at 81 Franklin Street in downtown Norwich, known then as the Colonial Upholstery Company. They eventually expanded and became the Colonial Upholstery and Bedding Company. As the years passed, they grew, taking over the four floors of 81 through 87 Franklin Street and renamed the company to the Colonial Upholstery and Furniture Company.

In 1953, two sisters from Cincinnati, Ohio came to New York City seeking adventure. Annie and Martha came up with the idea of making furniture out of various "parts". With flush doors and different sized legs they built dining tables, coffee tables, beds, sofas, room dividers, shelving, benches, and more.
These new creations were put on display in their first store, located in a brownstone on 51st Street and 3rd Avenue, which they named "Furniture in Parts". Annie and Martha lived just above their store and put all their energies into their new business.
Their hard work paid off when an editor from 'Look' magazine took notice of their novel approach to furniture and design. He wrote an article, accompanied with photos, all about their unique concept. It was in this 'Look' magazine article that their store "Furniture in Parts" was appropriately nick-named "Door Store". The article drew so much attention that several more newspaper and magazine stories followed. 98 years of Rubin's Furniture! That's a very long time. Almost a century ago, my grandfather, Ben Rubin came to Madison, Wisconsin from Russia and opened the very first Rubin's Furniture. Ben's two sons, Isadore Rubin and David Rubin were the 2nd generation of Rubins. In 1932 Isadore and David opened Badger Furniture, a modest store in downtown Madison. During my childhood I often helped my father, Isadore to shovel coal into the furnace on cold winter Sunday mornings. In high-school I worked part-time on the delivery truck and I helped unpack new furniture in the warehouse. During my college years, I graduated to the "floor" and began my sales career.

Staten Islander, Anthony Parisi, owner of EMPIRE Bedding & Furniture originally started with his father at Sleep City in New Dorp and before that in the early 70's at Victory Dinettes in Tompkinsville. When coming to Port Richmond in 1991, it was a "ghost town". Constantly putting money into promoting their business, EMPIRE Bedding & Furniture are the reason Port Richmond is the furniture capitol of Staten Island today.
