O ano de 1965 marca o início da história de Lojas Renner como uma empresa verdadeiramente independente. Até então, Lojas Renner existia como parte do grupo A. J. Renner, indústria fabril instalada no bairro Navegantes, em Porto Alegre (RS). Foi como parte integrante do grupo A. J. Renner que Lojas Renner inaugurou em 1922, na capital gaúcha, seu primeiro ponto-de-venda para a comercialização de artigos têxteis. Em 1940, ainda como empresa pertencente ao grupo, o mix de produtos foi ampliado e Lojas Renner passou a operar como uma loja de departamentos.
Em 1965, devido ao seu crescimento e evolução, o grupo A. J. Renner optou por tornar independentes as diferentes empresas que o formavam, ocasião em que foi então constituída a companhia Lojas Renner S.A. Dois anos depois, em 1967, Lojas Renner já se transformava em uma empresa de capital aberto.Após décadas de bom desempenho, Lojas Renner passou por uma profunda reestruturação no início dos anos 1990, passando a operar no formato de loja de departamentos especializada em moda.Ainda na década de 1990, impulsionada pela bem sucedida reestruturação e pela implantação da Filosofia de Encantamento - segundo a qual não basta satisfazer, mas superar as expectativas dos clientes - Lojas Renner expandiu suas operações para além do Rio Grande do Sul, chegando aos Estados de Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais e para o Distrito Federal, consolidando sua posição nesses mercados como uma loja de departamentos especializada em moda com mercadorias de qualidade a preços competitivos.Em 1991, quando teve início o processo de reestruturação, a Companhia contava com oito lojas e, até novembro de 1998, já havia inaugurado 13 novas lojas, totalizando 21 unidades.Em dezembro de 1998, a J. C. Penney Brazil, Inc. subsidiária de uma das maiores redes de lojas de departamentos dos EUA, adquiriu o controle acionário da Companhia.
Como subsidiária do grupo J. C. Penney, a Renner obteve alguns benefícios operacionais, tais como o acesso a fornecedores internacionais, a consultoria de especialistas na escolha de pontos comerciais, bem como a adoção de procedimentos e controles internos diferenciados. Isso contribuiu para um crescimento substancial da Companhia a partir de dezembro de 1998.
Com a implantação do conceito de lifestyle nas coleções e nas lojas, em 2002, mais um importante passo é dado na evolução de Lojas Renner. As coleções passam a ser desenvolvidas por estilos de vida e compostas por marcas próprias que refletem um jeito de ser e de vestir, com base em atitudes, interesses, valores, personalidades e hábitos dos clientes. Também as lojas passam a expor os produtos de forma coordenada, facilitando a escolha do consumidor e otimizando o seu tempo de compras.Em junho de 2005, ocasião em que a Companhia já atuava com 64 pontos-de-venda, a JC Penney, em conjunto com os administradores da Lojas Renner, optou pela venda do controle da Companhia através de oferta pública de ações na Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo.
A Lojas Renner entrou então no Novo Mercado da Bovespa como a primeira Companhia no país a ter seu capital pulverizado e aproximadamente 100% das ações em circulação.No ano em seguinte, em 2006, com a bem sucedida operação de pulverização das ações na Bolsa, o plano de expansão é intensificado e Lojas Renner inicia sua atuação no Nordeste, com a abertura de lojas nos estados de Pernambuco, Ceará e Bahia. Ao longo do ano são inauguradas 15 novas unidades e a Companhia chega ao número de 81 lojas.O ano de 2007 marca a continuidade do plano de expansão e a chegada da Companhia na região Norte, com a abertura de uma loja no estado do Amazonas.
Também é intensificada a presença no Nordeste com a entrada da Companhia nos estados de Sergipe e Paraíba e o fortalecimento da atuação na Bahia. Durante o ano foram abertas 14 novas operações e a rede chega ao final de dezembro com 95 lojas.
Hoje a Lojas Renner é a segunda maior rede de lojas de departamentos de vestuário no Brasil e das 111 lojas existentes, 104 estão instaladas em Shopping Centers e 7 em pontos centrais de cidades, nas regiões Sul, Sudeste, Centro-Oeste, Norte e Nordeste do país.
