In 1930 he founded the original Damascus Bakery at Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York, home to many Middle East people and cultures.<br> Hassan Halaby became well known for his delicious pita bread (which was then called Syrian bread).

Levain began as a small artisan bakery located in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side. First opened on December 16, 1995. Levain Bakery was founded by Connie McDonald and Pamela Weekes. Because the bakery is a small neighborhood place, where everything is made on the premises, visitors are able to watch the entire production of all the breads and cookies.
