Lower School teachers have been thinking together about the goals we set for social studies, in particular the conceptual goals that underlie our projects, trips and written tasks. As much as in literacy or math, we design a program to reflect students’ developmental orientation. We meet them where they are, tapping into their interests and curiosity within the framework of their realm of understanding. For example, we know that the younger child learns through concrete, personal experience – a trip or interview is a springboard for extended learning as your child reflects, questions, draws and writes about an exciting experience, turning it into new and deeper understanding. As the student matures and her worldview broadens, she extracts more and more information from books and symbolic communication, linking this to direct, interactive experience. Eventually, around Third Grade, students are ready to leave what we call the ”here and now” and enter the world of “long ago and far away;” to study those things that cannot be visited directly, tasted or touched. Thanks to the experiential foundation of their earlier years, eight and nine year olds are prepared to appreciate the flow and evolution of history and to conceptualize a timeline leading from then to now.

K-12 - The Dalton School is an independent, co-educational day school (K-12), founded in 1919 by the renowned progressive educator, Helen Parkhurst. Dalton is recognized for its rigorous, innovative educational curriculum and offers its 1300 students a breadth of stimulating and challenging programs taught by dedicated, professional faculty. <br> The school’s First Program (K-3) occupies three adjoining townhouses on East 91st Street in New York City. Middle and High School students attend classes nearby in our building on East 89th Street. Indoor physical education for Middle and High School students is provided in our state-of-the-art facility on East 87th Street.

N-12<br> Convent of the Sacred Heart combines an outstanding academic experience with an environment that nurtures the heart, mind and spirit of its young women. We offer a rigorous and challenging curricular program for girls from pre-k through grade 12. The intertwining of intellect and soul is the essence of a Sacred Heart education.

K-12. The Spence School is an independent college-preparatory day school for girls in kindergarten through grade 12. Founded by Clara B. Spence in 1892, Spence is committed to maintaining high academic standards, promoting diversity and teaching the basic human values of honesty and concern for others. With approximately 600 students, Spence is a small supportive community where the contributions of every student are valued. Marymount is a college preparatory, independent, Catholic day school for girls, founded by Mother Joseph Butler in 1926 as part of a worldwide school system directed by the Religious Order of the Sacred Heart of Mary. From kindergarten through senior year, roughly 670 students flow through these halls, each bringing their own perspectives and stories from across the greater New York area. The primary building stretches twelve stories along East 83rd Street with views toward the East River, creating an urban campus atmosphere that feels particularly intimate during winter months when the river takes on a quieter character. Just a few blocks north on East 87th Street, the Field House opens up space for a full slate of athletic pursuits—basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, squash, track, field hockey, and lacrosse all find homes here, with the facility providing a welcome refuge for winter sports and indoor training when the season turns cold.

A comprehensive academic school, which consists of 10 small learning communities that we call houses. CSI High School’s consistent, curriculum-wide emphasis on the infusion of international content and study of international issues provides a unifying framework for the school’s instructional program. St. Peter’s is operated by the Christian Brothers of St. John Baptist de La Salle, a worldwide Religious Order of 14,000 men with a history of 300 years of teaching experience. St. Peter’s is a part of a system of 17 schools operated by the Christian Bothers in the NY/NJ area. <br> St. Peter’s is a non-profit New York State Regents accredited high school accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and schools. It maintains a policy of non-discrimination of acceptance on the basis of ethnic or religious background.

Long noted as one of the best schools in the area, the magazine U.S. News and World Report named Farrell as one of the finest high schools in the United States. The independent study concluded that Farrell attained an extremely high level of distinction in every facet of school life. Further honors followed as the school was selected as one of only 16 to be named as New York City´s "Super Schools". The Daily News cited Farrell´s overall commitment to excellence and its dedication to the student body in its choice as an elite school.

N-12. Staten Island Academy is a coeducational college-preparatory day school educating students from age four through high school. The Academy was founded in 1884 and since that time it has stood as a beacon of educational excellence. <br> The school is the oldest private school on Staten Island and it is proud of its unique status as the only independent school in the borough. St. Joseph Hill Academy is a K-12 Catholic school operated by the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity. It is located on a fourteen acre, park-like campus in the Arrochar section of Staten Island, New York. The elementary school provides co-education for grades K-8. The high school enrolls approximately 400 young women.

In 1984, Townsend Harris was reopened with a new location and student body but the same spirit and desires as before. Beginning with the first new class, a tradition of expressing this spirit is found in the pledge the Townsend Harris student makes during his or her first year, known as the Ephebic Oath. The present school has had, from its inception, this rich tradition supported by an active group of alumni. The alumni arrange internships for students, serve as advisors and mentors and raise funds for special projects.

Cardinal Spellman HS is generally recognized as one of the finest Catholic high school structures in the nation. Its facilities include three floors of classrooms around a beautifully landscaped, Japanese-style, garden courtyard. In May of 1999, the courtyard was dedicated to the memory of Msgr Jeremiah Monahan, who had died suddenly in October, 1998. <br> In addition to the regular classrooms (each having closed-circuit television) there are many fully-equipped special-purpose rooms and learning spaces: a large Gymnasium which can be partioned into two or four smaller gyms, a Cafeteria for 700, a magnificent Auditorium with backstage space and rigging better than many Broadway theaters, a separate Little Theatre, a tiered Band Room and four separate and private music-practice rooms.
