Virginia State University, located in Ettrick, Virginia (near Petersburg, in the Richmond area), was founded on March 6, 1882. It was the United States's first fully state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for black Americans. Its first president was John Mercer Langston who later became the first African American elected to Congress from Virginia. The board of trustees was African American except for one member. The faculty of the collegiate program and the normal school was African American until the mid-1960s. The name used by the historically black university's athletic teams is the "Mighty Trojans." The third season of the reality television series College Hill was filmed at Virginia State University in 2006.

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, established in 1859, is among the nation's oldest and most distinguished institutions of higher learning. The college, the legacy of Peter Cooper, occupies a special place in the history of American education. It is the only private, full-scholarship college in the United States dedicated exclusively to preparing students for the professions of art, architecture and engineering.

The year of 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of Bronx Community College which was established in 1957 after a decade of effort by civic-minded groups in Bronx County to meet the growing need for increased higher education facilities in the “Borough of Universities and Progress.” Classes began with 125 students on February 2, 1959 at the former site of the Bronx High School of Science at Creston Avenue and 184th Street.

The University of North Florida?s primary focus is on instruction, informed by scholarly activity and a commitment to community involvement. The University provides a comprehensive array of degree programs, with a targeted emphasis on select programs where the University can be a national leader.

Goddard College was chartered in 1938 as successor to Goddard Seminary, a Universalist preparatory school, which had operated in Barre, Vermont since Civil War times. The Universalists, a controversial "liberal" sect, started the seminary as an alternative to the Baptists' Colby Academy and the Methodists' Montpelier Seminary. It served as a feeder school to Tufts University. In 1929 the Seminary became Goddard School for Girls, and in 1935 became a junior college for women.

Hampton University, a dynamic, progressive institution of higher education, is a privately-endowed, non-profit, non-sectarian, co-educational, historically black university. It is located in southeastern Virginia and boasts one of the loveliest campuses in the nation, with a picturesque waterfront and historic buildings and landmarks. The University of Toronto was founded as King’s College in 1827 and has evolved into a large and complex institution. It now occupies three campuses: Scarborough and Erindale and the historic St. George campus. It has federated with three smaller universities which are on the St. George campus, and is affiliated with several colleges and institutes. There are ten fully affiliated teaching hospitals in metropolitan Toronto. Faculty conduct research in many places in Canada and around the world.
