An online/mail-order bookdealer located in Downtown Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. We have been dealing in books since 1995 and living happily in Fort Greene since 1972.
Downtown Brooklyn is a fascinating place with a wealth of historical and cultural interest. It was the focal point of the Battle of Brooklyn (or, as some have it, the Battle of Long Island) and the departure point of Washington's famous retreat that saved American forces. The landmark Martyrs' Monument., which honors the more than 10,000 victims of British prison ships during the War for Independence sits in Fort Greene Park at the end of our street. At the other end of our street each November the runners in the New York City Marathon will pass along Lafayette Avenue. A bit further down Lafayette Avenue is BAM, the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Fort Greene is and has long been home to numerous artists and musicians. |

Another Bookstore is across the street from DiLoreto Hall next to Dunkin’ Donuts. We’re locally owned and independent. No corporate headquarters in another state. All Connecticut State University bookstores are run by Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. When you support a local independent bookstore like ours, the revenue is directly funneled back to the community throughout Connecticut. (Here’s Proof) We absolutely guarantee our textbook prices are lower than the local competition. (If we make a mistake you paid more, bring in your receipt and we’ll refund the difference and give you a free notebook for your trouble!)

The ranks of New Haven's used bookstores have thinned a little in recent years: Whitlock's on Broadway is gone, so too is the fine Elm City Books, which had a good run on York Street a few years back. But even if those stores were still around, the Book Trader would be a worthy winner of this category. And even if you couldn't buy a delicious sandwich or muffin here, it would still be a major destination for book lovers. The key is selectivity. The shelves are not weighted down by mediocrity, but rather lifted up by good stuff. Some of it is obvious: You'll get your Ian McEwan, your Kazuo Ishiguro, your Jonathan Spence. Some of it is more obscure: Sitting on shelves in recent weeks has been a first edition of John Ashbery's hard-to-find novel, which he co-authored with James Schuyler. And you can also buy a good paperback mystery or sci-fi adventure.
