A Landmark Among Downtown Washington DC Area Hotels - In 1843, Thomas Circle was a quiet residential neighborhood. In fact, the site of the current Washington Plaza was home to Andrew Wylie, presiding judge in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy trial. Nearly 120 years later, in 1962, the International Inn hotel chain opened the current property and changed the face of hotels in the Washington DC area once and for all. Architect Morris Lapidus -- known for the Fountainebleu and Eden Roc in Miami Beach -- insisted on designing a resort-like property that focused on the needs of the guests - not the owners.

The history of The News Journal reflects the changes in lifestyles and newspaper readership since the late 19th Century. In the late 1800s, four afternoon newspapers competed for readers in northern Delaware. Eventually, only one of those afternoon newspapers survived the newspaper wars and thrived until the latter part of the 20th century. By the end of the 20th century, the last evening newspaper (Evening Journal) disappeared and was replaced by a morning newspaper (The News Journal).
