Medgar Evers College was founded as a result of collaborative efforts by community leaders, elected officials, the Chancellor, and the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York. The College, named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community. The College is committed to the fulfillment of this mandate.

O CCS oferece à sociedade os únicos cursos de graduação totalmente gratuitos de Enfermagem, Farmácia, Medicina e Odontologia no Estado do ES. Esses cursos têm recebido bons conceitos nas avaliações do MEC, destacando-se como os melhores do Estado, cumprindo assim um importante papel como referência para cursos semelhantes oferecidos por instituições privadas. No ano de 2009, serão abertos dois novos cursos de graduação: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional. Para o ano de 2010, estão previstas as aberturas dos novos cursos em Fonoaudiologia e Nutrição. Os cursos de Pós-Graduação do CCS também recebido conceitos muito bons da CAPES e vêm cumprindo sua função na formação de mão de obra especializada para o ensino e pesquisa no estado, tanto para a própria UFES como para outras instituições. Destaca-se também a função social que estes Programas, em especial os de Ciências Fisiológicas e o de Doenças Infecciosas, com diagnóstico, atendimento e tratamento de pacientes de diversas doenças de alta incidência e importância na saúde publica como hipertensão, tuberculose, hanseníase, sífilis e AIDS. Dentro desse enfoque social, destaca-se também o fato de que o CCS é o maior prestador de serviços da UFES para a sociedade, através de diferentes projetos e programas de extensão e, principalmente, através da assistência médica e odontológica prestada nas dependências do HUCAM e do IOUFES

A Sociedade Universitária John F. Kennedy (SUNEDY) foi criada com o objetivo de angariar fundos para formar o patrimônio inicial da Fundação Universitária Sul-Fluminense (FUSF). Posteriormente, denominada Fundação Educacional Severino Sombra, Entidade Filantrópica, sem fins lucrativos, declarada de Utilidade Pública, mantenedora da Universidade Severino Sombra e demais órgãos suplementares. Em 29/01/67, em assembléia realizada no salão nobre da Câmara Municipal de Vassouras, foi instituída a Fundação Universitária Sul-Fluminense - FUSF e o Prof Severino Sombra de Albuquerque foi eleito, por unanimidade, seu Presidente "ad vitam".

Virginia State University, located in Ettrick, Virginia (near Petersburg, in the Richmond area), was founded on March 6, 1882. It was the United States's first fully state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for black Americans. Its first president was John Mercer Langston who later became the first African American elected to Congress from Virginia. The board of trustees was African American except for one member. The faculty of the collegiate program and the normal school was African American until the mid-1960s. The name used by the historically black university's athletic teams is the "Mighty Trojans." The third season of the reality television series College Hill was filmed at Virginia State University in 2006.

Fundada em 1948, sob a inspiração da educadora Helena Antipoff, três ações distintas e complementares definiram a vocação da SPERJ: a assistência médico-social, a assistência educacional aos portadores de deficiência e a formação de recursos humanos. Para cuidar do primeiro aspecto, instalou-se um modesto consultório. O segundo aspecto foi atendido com a criação das primeiras classes de alunos, selecionados no consultório, inaugurando-se a Escolinha que deu origem ao atual Centro Experimental Helena Antipoff - CEHA. E, finalmente, para contemplar o último ponto, realizou-se um curso de Orientação Psicopedagógica sobre "O problema da criança excepcional", destinado a formar profissionais para este trabalho, função que hoje é desempenhada pelas Faculdades da Pestalozzi - Escola Superior de Ensino Helena Antipoff - ESEHA.
