Levain began as a small artisan bakery located in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side. First opened on December 16, 1995. Levain Bakery was founded by Connie McDonald and Pamela Weekes. The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure set to open in 2008 as a public open space. Running through the West Side neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell's Kitchen, it was built in the 1930s to remove dangerous trains from Manhattan’s streets. No trains have run on it since 1980. Friends of the High Line (FHL), a community-based 501(c)(3) non-profit group, formed in 1999 when the historic structure was under threat of demolition. FHL is currently working with the City of New York to transform the structure into a park. The High Line south of 30th Street was donated to the City by CSX Transportation in 2005. The team of Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro is now at work on a design for the High Line’s public landscape. Construction began in spring 2006. More than 10,000 requests roll in yearly, which means the team constantly works to get the right language-speaking volunteer to the right traveler in the right spot at the right moment. When Master Malick Coulibaly dit Fall first imagined opening a martial arts studio in Central Harlem, it seemed like a distant goal. Friends and support from BRISC helped turn that vision into something tangible, eventually landing on 125th Street with a fresh, fully equipped training space. For two years, the studio welcomed learners of every age—kids and adults alike—who came to build discipline, respect, focus, confidence, and self-defense skills alongside physical conditioning and coordination. The winter months brought a particular energy to the studio, with students bundled up outside before stepping into the warm, focused atmosphere of the training floor. Though the doors have since closed, the impact of those years of dedicated instruction continues to resonate through the neighborhood.
