The main sanctuary welcomed its first visitors in 1879, though the ambition didn't stop there—Archbishop Michael Corrigan returned in 1888 to crown the West Front with its iconic twin towers, and by 1901 had added the Lady Chapel to the east side, expanding the vision further still. One of the oldest mystery specialist book stores in America, the Mysterious Bookshop is now in its 26th year. It is a two-story bookstore, with paperbacks on the ground floor (with a few new arrivals in Hardcover) and Hardcovers on the second floor. A spiral staircase connects the two floors. The shop is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The building depicted above is New York City's third City Hall. Constructed from 1803-1812, it was designed by John McComb, Jr. and Joseph-Francois Mangin. The building has undergone many restorations during its almost two hundred-year history. The original copper roof of City Hall was installed in 1811; it was replaced in 1853, and five years later, due to fire damage, replaced again. Additional work on the roof was undertaken in the early part of this century. Since that time, the last recorded work on the roof was undertaken in 1970, when roof openings were installed to accommodate new air conditioning units.

We meet them where they are, tapping into their interests and curiosity within the framework of their realm of understanding. For example, we know that the younger child learns through concrete, personal experience – a trip or interview is a springboard for extended learning as your child reflects, questions, draws and writes about an exciting experience, turning it into new and deeper understanding. As the student matures and her worldview broadens, she extracts more and more information from books and symbolic communication, linking this to direct, interactive experience. Eventually, around Third Grade, students are ready to leave what we call the ”here and now” and enter the world of “long ago and far away;” to study those things that cannot be visited directly, tasted or touched. Thanks to the experiential foundation of their earlier years, eight and nine year olds are prepared to appreciate the flow and evolution of history and to conceptualize a timeline leading from then to now.
