Argosy Book Store, founded in 1926, is now in its third generation of family ownership. We have an enormous stock of antiquarian and out of print items, occupying all of a seven floor building in midtown Manhattan, and a large warehouse in Brooklyn. Pageant Book Shop was founded in 1946 by Sidney B. Solomon and Henry "Chip" Chafetz as a used and rare book shop in New York City. Pageant had its home in several locations along Fourth Avenue, known as “Book Row of America”, for 35 years before moving around the corner to East 9th Street. During that time, Mr. Solomon and Mr. Chafetz branched out into several additional areas which included selling prints and maps, reprinting scholarly and important works such as Henry Roth’s “Call It Sleep” and publishing the award winning Pageant Facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible.

The ranks of New Haven's used bookstores have thinned a little in recent years: Whitlock's on Broadway is gone, so too is the fine Elm City Books, which had a good run on York Street a few years back. The bookstore opened in 1976, before the museum itself. It was designed by Jay Bright, who emulated the white oak finish of the Louis Kahn interior of the museum. The two comfortable chairs, visible from the street, and the custom designed fixtures were a significant counterpoint to the generic mall stores of the era. In 1980, we relocated an adjacent cheese store and expanded.

Having spent my first career in education and been a lover of good books, I hoped my next career would include books. I have always believed every town should have their own community bookstore, a place filled with good books, the type that get people to feel, to think, discuss, laugh and enjoy. To prepare for this goal, I worked part-time at a bookstore and learned the day to day operations. I took a course on the essentials of opening a quality bookstore and visited as many bookstores in New Jersey as I could. I found many bookstore owners to be both warm and generous with their time. Many of these owners have become close colleagues and remain a strong network helping my own bookstore, thrive and grow.

Selling used and rare books since 1948, Whitlock's Book Barn is located just minutes from downtown New Haven and Yale University. The store operates from two weatherbeaten barns sitting amid a scenic pasture.
For decades, buyers and sellers of used books, old maps, and ephemera have come to Whitlock's looking for intellectual adventure. With these pages, the store now offers a selection of items online, making it possible for those unable to visit to take advantage of the store's unusual finds and bargains.

Cave Comics opened on May 15th 1989 in the old train station in Newtown CT. It's a great old building with 14 foot ceiling giving us a nice open feeling space.
