They have spent a lifetime perfecting recipes from every corner of their homeland to bring authentic and traditional baked goods to those who seek the very best. Eli Zabar's world-renowned stores in New York on the upper east side include Eli's Manhattan, Eli's Vinegar Factory, E.A.T., and Eli's Bread. Only finest bread and delicious cookies baked every day. Our tradition to bake was established in 1930 by Hassan Halaby. In 1930 he founded the original Damascus Bakery at Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York, home to many Middle East people and cultures.
Hassan Halaby became well known for his delicious pita bread (which was then called Syrian bread).

With its vintage American desserts and decor, customers often remark that walking into the Bakery is like taking a step back in time. In 2007, the original owner decided to pass her oven mitts to a new family she felt would maintain the integrity of what had become an iconic brand. And so, Steve Abrams, a veteran NYC restaurateur and consultant along with his wife and daughter, took over the Bakery. Since then they have slowly and thoughtfully expanded from one shop to six.
