The original Boathouse was located at 1401 Highway 71 in Belmar and moved to its current location at 1309 Main Street in Belmar, in November 2000. The landmark tavern at Five Points in Mercerville was built in the mid-1700s. The exact date is not known, but it is rumored that George Washington and his troops passed by the tavern on their way to the “Battle of Princeton”. In later years, the tavern was owned by many prominent area families and can lay claim to the oldest liquor license issued in Hamilton Township.
