Following a tradition which has been molded through the years by hard-working citizens of Spencer, the county seat of Roane County, this year's Festival promises to provide a whirlwind of activities, offering something for everyone. <br> The creation of one of this state's best attended festivals began in 1954 when Henry Young sold two million pounds of black walnuts. Young's sale of the local product gave a member of the Little Kanawha Regional Council the idea of developing the black walnuts into a cash crop for local farmers.

Brazil’s Independence Day (September 7th) is the occasion chosen to bring Brazilian-Americans, Brazilians who live away from home and those many people interested in Brazil together for a very special event. In 1984 the City of New York proclaimed the first Sunday in September as the day in which it celebrates Brazilian Independence from Portugal, which took place on September 7th, 1822.

Running since 1881, this tournament caps off the competitive season with matches spread across two weeks that straddle Labor Day weekend. The acrylic courts at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center have hosted the action since 1978, and the crisp early autumn air brings a different energy than the other majors. The Winter Antiques Show is America's most prestigious venue for fine and decorative arts, benefiting East Side House Settlement. The 2008 Show will be held from January 18th to 27th in New York City, with the celebrated Opening Night Party on Thursday, January 17th.

The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival annually assembles some of the finest musicians in the world who reflect Parker’s musical individuality and genius, to promote appreciation for this highly influential and world-renowned artist. The concerts originally scheduled for August 27 and 28 and canceled due to Hurricane Irene will now be consolidated into one and will take place on Friday, September 23 at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem.

October - The Eerie Horror Film Festival (EHFF) was conceived, born and raised in Erie County, Pennsylvania and has since grown up to become one of the most popular and respected horror film festivals in the country. Debuting in October of 2004 at the Roadhouse Theater in Erie, the EHFF attracted thousands of fans and filmmakers to the Erie area and showcased nearly 40 independent films that had been submitted to us from all around the world.

September/October - The Backseat Film Festival is a rock ‘n roll film fest devoted to the best in edgy, unpretentious movies from all over the cinematic globe. December 31 - The New Year's event is special because it brings people together in a positive, interactive way - a way that combines the arts with the concept of responsible celebrating. Each of the past 14 years as many as 20,000 people of all ages - teens, singles, families, children and grandparents filled the streets of historic Annapolis enjoying an alcohol-free and drug-free celebration.

Sample the fine wines of Maryland while enjoying live music, local cuisine, and juried arts and crafts! The Wicomico County Autumn Wine Festival is one of only four wine festivals sanctioned by the Association of Maryland Wineries, and is the only such festival on the Eastern shore.

October - Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD) is a festival, which creates awareness, recognition, and promotion of the economic, social, recreational, cultural and historical impact of the tributaries and environs of the Patuxent River and the basin through which it flows. The festival is held annually on Columbus Day Weekend. The festival brings together, and reflects the continuing commitment of, the community, county and state government agencies, the Calvert Marine Museum, the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, and other historical and environmental groups, which share a desire to preserve the Patuxent River and to celebrate its positive influence on the area’s quality of life, in the past, present, and future.

November - The Festival is an annual celebration of Irish culture featuring international and local music and dance, traditional cuisine, workshops, cultural exhibits, and vendors of everything Irish. Along with the Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, it is an event in which all of the various Baltimore Irish Organizations join together to celebrate our common heritage.

September/October - Baltimore Book Festival! The mid-Atlantic's premier celebration of the literary arts features 200+ nationally known and local authors, poetry readings, cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs/cookbook authors, children's writers and activities, live music, food and more than 75 exhibitors and book sellers. <br> Located in Mount Vernon Square, the Washington Monument overlooks the festival site and offers the perfect location for a weekend outing.
