Having spent my first career in education and been a lover of good books, I hoped my next career would include books. I have always believed every town should have their own community bookstore, a place filled with good books, the type that get people to feel, to think, discuss, laugh and enjoy. To prepare for this goal, I worked part-time at a bookstore and learned the day to day operations. I took a course on the essentials of opening a quality bookstore and visited as many bookstores in New Jersey as I could. I found many bookstore owners to be both warm and generous with their time. Many of these owners have become close colleagues and remain a strong network helping my own bookstore, thrive and grow.

The cozy atmosphere makes browsing feel less like a task and more like settling in with a warm drink while snow falls outside. Staff members take time to understand what you're after, steering you toward hidden gems and bestsellers alike.

From birthday parties to corporate functions, the bookstore combines elegance with the extraordinary, all in one beautiful setting. Invite your guests to explore the unknown with a haunted cocktail brunch, a murder mystery dinner or afternoon tea complete with tea leaf readings. Everything from decor, invitations, entertainment and catering can call be arranged with us to custom create your perfectly paranormal party.

An eclectic mix of museum, bookshop, theatre, and saloon. Filmmakers, musicians, writers, and poets all regularly rent our space for premieres, readings, and concerts. Rental is for three hours and includes 25 folding chairs, podium, music stand(s) and/or screen -- all set up by our staff prior to your event. Our digital projector is not included in the initial rental fee, but can be arranged for a small, additional cost.

The stores are unlike any other bookstore in the area. Hot Pink, Purple, Apple Green, Turquoise are just a few of the bright colors to put a smile on your face as you enter. The many windows allow plenty of natural light for reading and tons of sunshine for the trees and plants to thrive. The ranks of New Haven's used bookstores have thinned a little in recent years: Whitlock's on Broadway is gone, so too is the fine Elm City Books, which had a good run on York Street a few years back. Selling used and rare books since 1948, Whitlock's Book Barn is located just minutes from downtown New Haven and Yale University. The store operates from two weatherbeaten barns sitting amid a scenic pasture.<br> For decades, buyers and sellers of used books, old maps, and ephemera have come to Whitlock's looking for intellectual adventure. With these pages, the store now offers a selection of items online, making it possible for those unable to visit to take advantage of the store's unusual finds and bargains.

Tucked inside Newtown's historic train station since 1989, this comic destination occupies a soaring space with 14-foot ceilings that create an airy, welcoming atmosphere. On a grey winter afternoon, the tall windows flood the shop with soft light, making it an inviting refuge for browsing. The team genuinely enjoys helping both newcomers picking up their first issue and seasoned collectors hunting for their next find, approaching every customer interaction as a chance to make things memorable. The vintage bones of the old building pair perfectly with the modern passion for comics, creating a spot where conversation flows as naturally as the open floor plan suggests.

Walk past the front windows on a crisp winter afternoon and you'll spot two inviting chairs bathed in warm light—a quiet counterargument to the cookie-cutter retail landscape that dominated the 1970s. This independent shop predates the museum next door by several years, having launched back in 1976 with interiors that echo the distinctive white oak character Jay Bright drew from the museum's iconic Louis Kahn architecture. The custom-built shelving and thoughtfully curated fixtures were deliberate choices that set the tone from day one. When a neighboring cheese operation closed in 1980, the owners seized the opportunity to expand into that space, creating a more generous experience for browsing and lingering—the kind of place that feels especially welcoming when you need refuge from the cold.
