Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói tinha sido concluído ainda há poucos meses, quando o então prefeito da cidade, Jorge Roberto Silveira, convidou o arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer para uma nova empreitada. Pensando em revitalizar a zona central de Niterói, Jorge Roberto decidiu construir num terreno de 72.000 m² à beira mar, um complexo arquitetônico, voltado para a cultura e a religião da população. Certo de que seria um importante intervenção urbanística, o prefeito convidou Niemeyer para criar as edificações que, juntas com o MAC, formariam um caminho ao longo da orla, o Caminho Niemeyer. Since its birth almost forty years ago as the "First Inland Oceanarium", the Aquarium of Niagara has seen over 8 million visitors, tourists, teachers, and students pass through its doors. It was the first aquarium to use synthetic seawater to exclusively maintain marinelife. More than forty exhibits showcase 1,500 aquatic animals from around the globe.
The Aquarium of Niagara is one of only 17 institutions in North America to house a colony of the endangered Peruvian penguin. Two daily penguin feedings provide visitors an opportunity to "Meet the Keeper" and learn about these fascinating aquatic birds!
The schedule includes exciting shark feedings (on alternate days), and scheduled sessions with the California sea lions in the 100,000 gallon central pool. O Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian foi criado em 11 de março de 1971 e recebeu este nome em homenagem à instituição cultural portuguesa sediada em Lisboa, a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. A origem do Centro Calouste Gulbenkian, que está instalado na Praça Onze, está ligada à necessidade de formar professores de artesanato para atender às escolas públicas do Estado do Rio. Os cursos de Artes oferecidos no Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian traduzem uma proposta artístico-educacional diversificada e plural, dentro de uma prática atualizada e dinâmica, onde múltiplas linguagens artísticas se integram - do artesanato à pesquisa com novos matérias.
